When you’ve been an ice cream addict like me for 26 years, giving the stuff up is rough. I’d rather endure weaning all over again than try and shake my double scoop habit.
Thankfully though, I’ve found something that satisfies my deepest, darkest most intense ice cream cravings – this Chocolate Brownie Batter Blizzard that doesn’t contain one lick of dairy.
Oh me oh my. oh.
The base is a spin off of my creamy chocolate breakfast shake, and the brownie should look familiar from earlier this week: my 5-minute espresso walnut brownies. Marry the two together and we have one insanely rich spoonable beverage on our hands.
Dare I say, worthy of the title “blizzard”? Yes, I do.
Just looking at the pictures again I already want another. The base is rich with chocolate flavor and you can’t detect the strawberries one bit. The banana flavor is ever-so-subtle so even if you’re a banana hater I’d still suggest you give it a try.
The no-bake brownie bits melt into the shake seamlessly and get all fudgy and creamy and every bite seems better than the last.
The best part? It really is healthy enough to be breakfast. Sure, there’s a lot of sugar but it’s from all natural sources and there’s no gluten, dairy or unhealthy fats. See, told you it’s perfect for breakfast. Cheers!
Chocolate Brownie Batter Blizzard
Ingredients
- 2 frozen ripe bananas (chopped prior to freezing)
- 1/3 cup frozen strawberries
- 2-3 heaping Tbsp cocoa OR cacao powder
- 1 heaping Tbsp salted almond butter
- 1 – 1 1/2 cups unsweetened vanilla almond milk (sub soy or coconut)
- 1 dash stevia or agave nectar (depending on sweetness of bananas)
- 1/3 cup ice
- 2 brownies (5-minute espresso walnut brownie // crumbled)
Instructions
- Place all ingredients EXCEPT brownies in a blender and blend until smooth.
- If you prefer a sweeter shake, add more stevia or agave. If you prefer it thinner, add less ice OR more almond milk.
- Divide between serving glasses (two as original recipe is written) and layer with brownie crumbles. Serve immediately or freeze, covered for later.

So what is the measurement for the cocoa powder. I have made this several times (because it is so delicious) and I always used tablespoons. But I just realized this evening that it does not say. Since I love chocolate, it was perfect for me but maybe for “normal” people that would be too much? Thanks for clarifying that.

Thank you for the lovely review and for letting us know about the error, Vivian. Tablespoons is correct. We’ll get that updated!

This looks soooo delicious!!!!!!!!!!!! I can’t get enough of chocolate things, especially in the winter. :-) I added 30 chocolate chips to this also and that made it just perfect.

Oh my gosh, Dana, you hit one out of the park again!! I just finished this and it was SO good, I knew I just had to comment/rate it right now!! It tasted just like a blizzard, except I think better, because it wasn’t as heavy and sickeningly over-sweet as some blizzards can be, and just tasted more…pure? if that makes sense… I did make some changes, which I am sure frustrates bloggers and fellow readers alike, but I am one of those people who constantly feel the urge to tinker with every. single. recipe. they make, even if it is perfectly delicious as is. :P But I didn’t change much and I still loveloveLOVED it!! Thanks so much for yet another amazing recipe, Dana!! You have some of the best!!! <3

Is there anything I can sub for the banana? I’m allergic.
Dana @ Minimalist Baker says
Maybe ice cubes and some frozen fruit, such as blueberries and strawberries?
Yumna says
Realise this is years later but frozen avocado chunks will work a charm! Steamed and frozen sweet potato, cauliflower or zucchini will also work, just adjust sweetness to taste x

My husband and I actually make a shake very similiar to this great recipe of yours and just add a chocolate protein powder for more of a chocolate punch!
Looks great!

Dairy Queen used to have (and maybe they still do) a brownie batter blizzard, with about a gazillion calories. I’m so trying this version soon!
